Overview

Ramakech occupies a stretch of land at the edge of the Palmeraie, north of the city, where a French visual artist has assembled one of the more genuinely surprising spaces in the Marrakech region. It is a sculpture park in the loose sense of that term, though the experience it produces has more in common with a dreamscape or an inhabited fable than with any conventional gallery-in-the-open-air. Monumental animal figures move through the landscape or hold their position in configurations that suggest interrupted narratives: dogs, snails, horses, ants rendered at a scale that shifts the proportions of everything around them. The architecture is equally charged. A house appears to have fallen from the sky and embedded itself in the earth at an angle. Another is inverted, its roof in the ground and its foundations reaching upward. The Giant's House, the Upside-Down House, and other named structures are set across the site with an internal logic that becomes clearer, though never entirely transparent, as you move through it. The references are to childhood, to scale as something experienced rather than measured, to the kind of spatial strangeness that persists in memory. Ramakech is accessible only by reservation, as part of a guided immersive visit. The format suits the content: arriving without context would miss much of what the site offers. It is not connected to the Medina or the souk circuit and asks a different kind of attention from those circuits.
